Wear a jacket while riding - or else! « Thread Started on Jul 28, 2008, 9:05am »
Ok, so I was surfing behind the 230 this weekend and got pulled over by a Sheriff's boat. I wasn't wearing a jacket at the time and got a ticket for violating TWRA's pfd regulations. I asked why I had to wear a vest while surfing with no rope - considering you don't have to wear a vest while surfing in the ocean. That got me nowhere. For what it's worth, the officer was super polite, but he was not willing to just give me a warning.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know to wear a vest while surfing if you want to avoid a ticket.
I've reviewed the applicable TWRA regulations, and I don't see how they apply to wakesurfing. I plan on appearing in Court next month and asking that the ticket be dismissed. We'll see what happens....

yea Phil's dad got a ticket at the start of the year over a dry suit with no jacket and then the guy read to us in the boating manual that if there is a spotter/170degree mirror and a coast guard approved vest on board the boat then you are not violating any laws. I think they threw his out but not completely sure about that. If you don't have a copy of that boating manual I'm referring to then ask your local TWRA guy, they keep lots in the boat to pass out.

Did you ever go to court? What became of it?
My buddy bought a '08 LSV, so we can finally surf. I would like to know all the rules and laws surrounding it. There seems to be a lot of conflicting stories out there.

Ok. Well I just got back from Court. The office showed up, and he was super nice. I explained to the judge that, because I wasn't being pulled by anything attached to the boat, I didn't believe the regulations regarding sking applied to me. The judge agreed that the law is ambiguous, and dismissed the ticket. However, I assured the officer that I would opt to wear a jacket from now on. I suggest that you all do the same.
